I picked this up in the Ipswich Oxfam shop for 99p today. Eddie Phillips of the Creation recorded this rather obscure number for Don Arden's Jet Records in 1978. It's all about the dude in the cape, not the Nietzsche ubermensch thing though perhaps it would have been better if it was. There's a sort of disco/glam vibe to the title track and it's as cheesy as you'd expect. The flip side is a wafer thin funky number typical of the era.

Haven't updated this site for ages *smack on wrist*, here's what's going on with BIA

1) Braincandy II is still on for June 26th. There will be two BIA films on show, the same as the last Colchester gig

2) Webhosting is on it's way. I hope to have 2 demos online for downloading shortly.

3) There is a possible summer show in Colchester with a DJ SET, details TBC.

4) Myspace pages are updated fairly regularly, so keep checking for news etc there!

Thanks to everyone who came to the People Like Us show in Colchester last night. There was a lot of interesting visuals on show that night from a wide variety of filmmakers, myself included.

To everyone that missed out, you now have 2 more chances this week to catch BIA at the Arts Centre. On Wednesday 22nd, The London Dirthole Co, Colony, Sleepmachines, Fabienne Audeoud, Richard DeDomenici and the lunatic performance artist Justice Yeldham will be entertaining you in there own unique ways.

On Thursday 23rd, Kip Keino, Um, The Mice, Andrew Bailey, Freeze Puppy will be joining myself, Fabienne, Richard and Justice Yeldham again for more shenanigans.

This event will be recorded for a live Justice Yeldham 7", so be there and make some noise.

Despite some sound problems, Braincandy was a big success. Look out for BIA again at future IP1 events with brand new material. In the mean time, work on a new short film is proceeding for the Franko B residency at Colchester in February. The exact date of the show is TBC. Please note i will be appearing under my own name (Doug F.) rather than BIA for this one and the tone of the event will be slightly more serious.

Braincandy, January 16th at Ipswich Corn Exchange, will be the debut Ipswich show for BIA, but will be a bit different from previous shows, yet strangely similar.

Essentially, i have nothing to do with the organising of this show. All the films have been given to the organisers at IP1 zine (their page is in my friends bit somewhere) and unfortunately there will be very little new material due to time contraints. What you will probably get is this:

1)The Smash My Face In video from Colchester last May.
2)The Christmas video from the December show in Colchester (TBC this one, it isn't christmas in january afterall!)
3)The only performance of "Devil Turds Of Love" on a big screen.
4)The hopefully-availible-for-download-soon video for Technologic by Daft Punk.

CD AVAILIBILITY: Due to the roaring success of the BIA show in Colchester last saturday, a lot of releases are now gone. The split EP with Chau Project is now only availible off Tom from Chau Project in very small numbers, no reprint is currently planned for this disk. Seedy CD EP is gone for good. Eighties Movie Soundtrack Disaster is still availible, i'm just waiting on some extra CD sleeves.

CHRISTMAS DOWNLOADS: The very, very limited edition christmas EP will be availible for download for a couple of weeks only before being removed for a whole year. Get 'em while you can.

Mutebox R.I.P (?)

Rumour has it that the Mutebox site is being formally disbanded sometime soon. This is unfortunate, but sadly seems inevitable given the downturn in gigs and lack of interest from most members of the site, myself included. It was always going to be hard, though easier than Ipswich i would have to say, but the idea behind the site has well and truly burnt out.

My personal opinion is that this could have been avoided but for want of communication between people, but it is now a matter of time.

BIA recently paid a visit to Birmingham for the most excellent Supersonic festival (http://www.capsule.org.uk). After excellent performances from the Modified Toy Orchestra, Shitmat and others, the festival (and city) was evacuated due to a major bomb threat at a hotel. Despite sleeping on the floor of the local university, I survived intact. However, I may have some news regarding what caused the bomb scare, stay tuned for a further update.

"Seedy CD EP" is a new sampler with material mainly from "The Eighties Movie Soundtrack Disaster" demos. Due to the handmade artwork, only five of these have been made and only two remain in my possession. Despite the material appearing on other releases past, present and future, these are real collectors items and will not be remade ever again.

So no blowing your nose on the kitchen roll cover, BIAtchs!

SMASH MY FACE IN REVIEWED (finally)

I’m sitting here writing this with a monumental hangover due to over indulgence on the arts centre’s free beer last night. Smash My Face In was a big success for all concerned and now the dust from the smashed garden gnome has settled (long story...) it’s time for the inevitable musings on the proceedings.

I shall review myself last of all. As for the other participants...

Mixomatosis - Took miming to a backing track to new heights of ludicrousness (is that a word?) by nearly breaking his nose on stage! The bootlegs were quality, Marvin Gaye versus Nine Inch Nails being a highlight for most people.

Scorpio Scorpio - Cock rock in a cardigan, Oz style. Proof that a band with only one member can fill a stage. The funniest moments were when he acted all gangster hardman - “This song’s about all the cunts i’ve killed”

Bullseye - Possibly the funniest thing ever in the whole world of everness. James from V/Vm really milked the Jim Bowen-isms for all they were worth, though I don’t remember Jim Bowen having hair like Toyah Wilcox. The prizes were truly awful - boy band video, Jive Bunny record, goldfish food and the very worst garden gnome in the history of the world. Congratulations to Alex Maroon and Dulcie Wood for winning and bringing a touch of glamour to the occasion.

Abominable Mister Tinkler - I’ve seen AMT more times than I can remember and somehow managed to miss most of the set this time. You can always expect a good show with Tinkler and this was no exception.

V/Vm - The special “Sick Love” set. James was especially dressed in a pink paisley top with massive pink hearts hand made by his girlfriend. Despite insisting that he wouldn’t, there was time a bit of rolling around on the floor to Meat Loaf and sometime during the set the infamous gnome was obliterated. It was a pity Fast Lady had to pull out, but the sheer hilarity of a crazy nothern bloke going mental in pyjamas on stage (and on the floor) made up for it.

Then there was little old me and problems abounded from the off. The DVD player at the arts centre wouldn’t play my VCD, but I was rescued by the loan of a brand spanking new player which I had a run and get myself in the pissing rain. Once the player was set up the disc played fine. Then it was just a case of waiting for the audience to turn up. I must confess that when the time came to actually play the film it did seem like I was the only person in the room watching it. An awful lot of people turned up for half past eight when the film was already half way through. Can’t really be helped I suppose. Plenty of positive feedback from people, but the film needed about three or four weeks more work to get it totally up to scratch. There’s a noticeable moment about three quarters of the way through when, if you watch the film enough times, you can see that I basically gave up trying to make the video match the audio.

If there’s a next time, then next time will be better!

I know the question on the tip of your collective tongues: How can i get hold of this mazin' EP?! Well, there are two ways. 1) Disguise yourself as Justin Badhand, steal his identity, kill Justin, hide the body, marry Helen yourself and take the copy i'm giving to them at the engagement party. CAUTION: this will require you to go ginger (and kill, obviously). 2) Post the words "I'm a total BIAtch" and your name in this thread. The first 10 people to do this will get a copy at Smash My Face In or by post if they're not attending said shindig. Everybody else is out of luck. There will be a total of 11 copies of the EP with proper artwork printed at my expense and then no more, except pirate copies you lot knock off for mates (feel free to do so), as this EP was made with every intention of being an extremely limited release. Plus it's crap, basically. This could be the last you hear of Big In Albania for a while. I've already decided it's time for a hiatus to collect material for a new release that could be some distance away. They'll be a compilation of earlier stuff at some point in the summer. Alas, the moment has come. I must sully the shiny newness of this website with my ill conceived words. Time for a potted history, blatantly lifted from my infinitely more talented friends at http://www.mutebox.co.uk...

BIA was formed in 1986 when a young Doug F. looked over someone's shoulder at school and realized nicking other people's hard work could be fun. Having experienced first hand (often at full volume) the bedroom genesis of Cats Against The Bomb's first demos and being a fan of plunderphonics legends like Negativland and the KLF, our man purloined some software off his brother and made a demo called "The Eighties Movie Soundtrack Disaster" in a week. The classics were all there: Akira, Terminator, Transformers, Zardoz, Biggles... He then spend the rest of the year trying to work out what all the knobs and buttons on Sonic Foundry actually do... If you like cheap, nasty soundtracks, dated synth-pop and dialogue samples of questionable artistic merit, then download away. It's not like youre stealing or anything...

I'm starting this blog in lieu of a proper website as quite frankly I know f*ck all about html and technical jiggerypokery (can I swear on here?) and don't have time to learn right now. Better than nothing I s'pose.

The name Big In Albania comes from a song by Norman Wisdom and the Pikinis which was only released in Albania itself. There's a book by Tony Hawks called "One Hit Wonderland" which recounts his attempts at scoring a number one in any country and believe the song in question didn't actually top the charts. Maybe someone that's actually read the book can correct me if I'm wrong, though no comments on Mr Hawks skateboarding skills please.

As of the present moment, there have been a shedload of Big In Albania releases in a little under a year. More potted history follows...

The Eighties Movie Soundtrack Disaster was the pre-BIA name demo made ultra-quickly in a matter of days. Most of it sounds fairly awful to me now, though it does contain the original version of "Seeds Of Evil" and sometime BIA classic "Bigboote". In total, about 10 copies were made, though I did manage to get one to Canada and another to Australia.

Escape From The Eighties Movie Soundtrack Disaster was the inevitable sequel which every bad film needs. Again, a bit rushed. "Kicked In The Nadsat" stands out by a mile as a good example of when samples fit together purely by chance. About 5 copies were made of this one, all with atrocious photocopied artwork. If you have the Director's cut version with all twelve tracks then you have one of about 7 or 8 copies. Keeping track of my output so far is not something I'm particularly good at despite being rather anal about it.

Pixel Dust was the low point of the early years (or should that be year?) as just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong. The theory - make a album entirely out of computer game sounds. The practice - too bloody ambitious for my own good. Most of this demo is padded out with stuff added at the last minute that didn't fit on EFTEMSD. About 6 copies of this one, all of 'em rubbish!

Dance Like 1984 was a rush job sampler put together for ATP in November 2004 which I didn't give to anyone at the festival out of no particular reason. This is actually the best thing I've done just because I'd finally worked out how to make descent songs at last! Features the new and improved version of "Seeds Of Evil" and five other excellent tracks. Only five copies made.
